Floating licenses in detail

A floating license is not a fixed seat for a single user, but a shared license seat: several users can be assigned to the license, but only as many can work with it at the same time as there are license seats. This concept pays off especially when not all assigned users work with Rillsoft at the same time.

Assignment and activation

A floating license must be activated first before it can be assigned to users. The actual assignment, as well as creating new floating licenses, is described step by step in Floating licenses of a client.

Note

Activating a floating license is only required on an on-premises server. In Rillsoft Cloud, activation happens automatically after purchase. Users can be assigned to the floating license under both operating models, see Cloud vs. on-premises operation.

When all license seats are in use

Since a floating license only allows a limited number of concurrent sessions, access can fail if all seats are already in use by other user sessions. You can see an overview of currently used floating licenses under Locks > Locked floating licenses, see Lock. From there, a no-longer-needed session can be ended to free up the license seat again.
